“I have the experience [to deal with the situation],” he said at his pre-match press conference. “I had a bad run while I was at Southampton and we had a bad run here last season but we came out of that.
“I have the belief, I have the confidence that we can come out of this. We knew at the start the season with the Thursday night Europa League games and then to play the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United on the following Sundays [was going to be tough].
“But yesterday against Atalanta really was a wake-up call.”
Koeman has also called on his senior players to stand up and be counted when the Toffees take on Jose Mourinho’s side, who currently top the Premier League table with three wins and a draw from their opening four fixtures.
“I saw the team with a lot of doubts on Thursday,” added Koeman. “One of our strengths last season was that we had a good defensive organisation but we’ve lost our strengths at the moment. If you lose that against the big teams in the Premier League, [you will be punished].
“After this press conference, I’ll have a meeting with most of the players, the key players. You can complain at young talents who are 18 or 19 years old, but it’s time for the experienced players to stand up.”
