Everton fans express anger at David Moyes on Twitter after Dier and Mustafi net at Euro 2016
Euro 2016 began on Friday and one man who may be watching on with his hands covering his eyes is David Moyes.
That is because two players he had at Everton and decided not to keep or sign permanently have played starring roles.
England goalscorer Eric Dier, now a star with Tottenham Hotspur, was on loan at Everton as a teenager in 2011.
He was not given a first team chance and Everton manager at the time David Moyes did not push to sign him on a permanent basis.
Now given that he is a senior England international at 22, it looks very clearly like a bad move. And it is not the only one.
Germany's opening goalscorer against Ukraine was Shkodran Mustafi, the same player who Everton decided to release in 2012.
The Toffees had snapped him up as a teenager in 2009 from Hamburg's academy, but after only one substitute appearance in the Europa League, he was allowed to leave.
Now considered a starter at international level with Germany, and producing the goods on the big stage, the decision looks like lunacy.
An Everton defence of Mustafi partnered with John Stones, protected by Eric Dier in defensive midfield would be a drastic improvement on their current options, and the pair would cost multi-millions to buy back, if they were even available. |
