Middlesbrough have emerged as a possible destination for Aiden McGeady, who is expected to continue his Championship career away from Preston North End.
McGeady was Preston's player of the season after starring on loan from Everton and the Toffees are ready to sell the Glaswegian with a year remaining on his contract.
The 31-year-old is on a good Premier League deal - believed to be worth in the region of £40,000 per week - and he would have to take a substantial pay cut to join Preston, who would be very keen to sign the player on a permanent basis.
However, Preston have a modest wage structure by Championship standards and do not have the financial muscle to compete with other clubs in the division that would have the means to match McGeady's current deal, or at least ensure that he is paid at a similar level.
Middlesbrough are understood to have earmarked McGeady as a player that would help them in their mission to get back to the Premier League at the first attempt.
