David Unsworth and Joe Royle will take temporary charge of the Everton first team ahead of Sunday’s final Premier League game of the season against Norwich City.
Unsworth has managed the Under-21s since the 2014-15 season. A former Everton schoolboy, he made 350 appearances for the first team in two spells at the Club and was a key member of the team which won the FA Cup in 1995, with Royle as manager.
An Everton Giant, Royle made 276 appearances between 1966 and 1974 and in four seasons between 1967 and 1971 he rifled in a remarkable 95 goals from 190 appearances. For five seasons he was Everton’s top goalscorer, scoring 23 goals in the Championship-winning side of 1969-70. He also enjoyed a Charity Shield victory and was part of the side that lost out in the FA Cup final of 1968.
He became Blues manager in November 1994, when he replaced Mike Walker, and guided the Club to sixth in 1996, a year after the FA Cup victory over Manchester United at Wembley.
