David Unsworth has revealed “massive players” Seamus Coleman and Yannick Bolasie are edging closer to making Everton “a lot stronger” by stepping up their rehabilitation from long-term injuries.
Winger Bolasie has been sidelined since last December after suffering a serious knee injury against Manchester United in a 1-1 draw at Goodison, while Coleman broke his leg in March while captaining the Republic of Ireland in a World Cup qualifier with Wales.
Both players have made significant steps in the past week, with Unsworth confirming Bolasie began training with Everton’s Under-23s on Monday, and Coleman had done light work with the Ireland squad.
Although the Blues boss was keen to stress the Club’s medical staff would determine when the duo were fully fit and ready, he said further progress could mean comebacks in the new year.
And Unsworth admitted their returns, along with the likes of James McCarthy – who is currently out with a hamstring problem – would be a huge boost for the Toffees.
Asked when Bolasie and Coleman could return, Unsworth said: “Probably late December, going into the new year. Probably Yannick will be a bit before but certainly Seamus will be going into January. They are two massive players, aren’t they, and if we can get those two players back into the team and James McCarthy as well, we will look a lot stronger.
“Seamus hasn’t resumed full training yet with the first team. He’s had a couple of sessions with the Under-23s and he’s done a little bit of training over with Ireland, which is great and I thank them for that. So we’ll assess him probably more next week to see if he can be integrated into a few more sessions.
“But we work alongside the fitness coaches and the physios and the doctor and we’ve got to be careful we don’t rush him back because we don’t want him to get injured again.
“Yannick’s had four sessions with the Under-23s and had a gym session this week as well. He’s absolutely chomping at the bit, which is great.”
