JAMES MCCARTHY TELLS EVERTON HE WANTS TO LEAVE
Irish international James McCarthy has told Everton that he wants to leave in search of regular first-team football, according to the Daily Mail.
Speculation has been rife about the defensive midfielder’s role within the squad under new manager Ronald Koeman as Idrissa Gueye was brought in to shore up the midfield as one of Koeman’s first signings.
Gueye has effectively taken and improved upon McCarthy’s position in the team and has made a fine pairing with Gareth Barry in the middle of the park.
It seems that McCarthy has not impressed his new manager all too much although it’s worth noting that it is his first new manager in almost 10 years as he has played under former Everton and current Belgium manager Roberto Martinez for most of his career.
McCarthy has only managed Premier League minutes out of position filling in for injured fellow countryman Seamus Coleman who is expecting to be out for about two more weeks. However, after being subbed off in the first half against West Brom, Mason Holgate had a quite remarkable performance and it would be hard to see McCarthy displacing him in the team currently.
It has been made clear that Ronald Koeman wants to further improve his midfield as rumours of Axel Witsel earlier in the summer as well as Moussa Sissoko currently mean that McCarthy could see himself further down the pecking order.
Ireland international manager Martin O’Neil has made it clear that his players need to play to warrant a place in his team and McCarthDarron Gibson who is arguably one of Ireland’s better midfield players did not even make the squad for their Euro 2016 run and Aiden McGeady played a significantly reduced role after being loaned to Sheffield Wednesday in January.
McCarthy knows to maintain his international career it would be in his best interests to leave the club with the likes of Celtic, should he wish to return to Scotland or Crystal Palace and Sunderland among others interested in attaining his services. Purchased for £13m by Roberto Martinez, he may be available for around £20m. would have seen first hand how his Everton and Ireland teammates international careers were effected by not playing regularly.
