If the Everton hierarchy, some of whom met yesterday in London, have made up their minds on Martinez’s future - for better or for worse - then they need to act.
Nobody needs this uncertainty to be dragged out.
Martinez doesn’t need stringing along until the end of the season, in some kind of football management purgatory, if they have ruled his time has come to an end.
He has overseen one season of success and two of failure and many fans now believe his time is up but either way the Catalan needs to know where he stands.
Sure, he understands the scrutiny but the speculation and seeing a growing list of managers linked with his job, has to be unsettling in the very least.
He has done his best for Everton (it has not always been good enough) and he is genuinely proud and honoured to manage the club.
And he still believes he can bring success here.
But the problem is he doesn’t know, and nor do the fans, if he is going to be given time to do that.
This is not a decision that can be taken lightly but an agreement must be made as quickly as possible.
Today’s atmosphere at Goodison for the visit of Bournemouth has the potential to be many things: subdued, upbeat over the inclusion of Academy players in the team, but it could also be nasty.
As soon as Everton have come to a decision then they need to make it public.
The fans, many of whom are planning protests at the game, need to know if Martinez will be the manager of their club next season.
They’ll either accept the club’s decision or be angered by it.
But at least they’ll have an answer.
