Everton have condemned the personal abuse directed towards forward Neal Maupay following Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Fulham at Goodison Park.
The Frenchman was tasked with leading the Blues' frontline for the Premier League opener against the Londoners but spurned a handful of golden opportunities to put Everton ahead in the first half. Sean Dyche's side, operating without Dominic Calvert-Lewin - who wasn't in the squad, later fell behind to a Bobby De Cordova-Reid strike roughly 15 minutes from time and therefore suffered a first defeat of the season.
Taking to Instagram after the game, Maupay revealed the vile messages he had been sent from a small number of fans after his performance in Saturday's game, writing: "Gutted about the result today, we tried our best but it wasn't enough. This is what I get for not scoring. No one should ever deal with this."
And swiftly after the forward disclosed such vile hate comments which were directed at his mother, Everton released a statement criticising the hate - and encouraged supporters to report anyone using social media platforms to abuse players.
